'Graduates 2005-06'

Year three

In 2005-6, there were 16 full-time and two part-time candidates from Mainland China, Greece, Ireland and the UK.

The cohort produced some excellent sound design for moving image in collaboration with Edinburgh College of Art Animation Department, systems for predictive sonic structure generation and development of a new mechanism for converting gestures in space to sound.

Some biographies are listed below.

Eoin McNamara

Upon finishing his undergraduate degree in music Eoin went on to study sound design in Edinburgh. During the course he developed a strong interesting in both sound a video editing. He also became a reluctant MaxMSP fan-boy. After having spent a number of months working as a freelance video librarian he now works full time at a Dublin based television company as a video editor.

Nikos Karavas

Since successfully completing the MSc Sound Design with distinction, Nikos Karavas has moved to London and is working as a freelance sound designer and composer.

Pablo Herrera

Pablo Herrera
Pablo Herrera graduated from the MSc in Sound Design in 2006. He is currently enrolled as a MDes/PhD student at the Edinburgh College of Art under supervision of Noe Mandelle to further studies in Film and TV. He aims to continue research on the New Sound of Cuban Popular Music and to produce a documentary film relating to this new period of research.

With support from the British Council Pablo Herrera is currently devising an urban music exchange programme between the UK and Cuba. The project will compile both the academic and creative outcomes of the exchange (London/Habana) and will be the basis for his documentary film research on Popular Music and Culture in Cuba.

Nick Wilsdon

I’m currently carrying out research and developing a prototype motion-sensing instrument funded by NESTA. I have also been carrying out continuing work on music and live performances and managed to grab my first international performance in Barcelona last December. Jules Rawlinson

Jules RawlinsonOn completing the Sound Design MSc programme, Jules began working towards a PhD in Composition supervised by Michael Edwards and Martin Parker. His PhD was awarded in 2011 following submission of a portfolio of electronic compositions that are performed using graphic scores, custom software and adaptable controllers that have no specific musical use, e.g. graphics tablet, 3D space navigator.

Alongside his PhD, Jules also completed sound design and multimedia commissions for Glenmorangie and New Media Scotland, contributed to Cybersonica’s AVLab and Future of Sound/Future of Light events, and featured on Radio 3’s Hear and Now programme, where he performed a series of live “instant remixes” of mixed chamber works.

Jules has taught on both the Sound Design and Digital Composition programmes, and was recently appointed as Teaching Fellow in Design and Digital Media at Edinburgh University.
