6th Feb 2009, the sound of space - sonic image beyond the screen

This special symposium is designed to explore sound spatialisation and its relation to the sonic image, both on and off screen.  The event is hosted in combination with SCREEN, the University of Edinburgh Music Department , Sound Design MSc and the Soundings Festival.
The event will take place in the Graduate School Atrium at the department of Music starting at 5pm on the 6th February 2009 and will feature sound examples in mono, stereo, 5.1 and after the event there will be a diffusion of music across a bespoke 20 channel sound system curated by Robert Dow.

Themes

How does a spatialised sound inform our interpretation of image?
Is spatialised sound more image-like than a point source?
What technology and tools are available to explore and expand the perception of space in a cinema?
Surround sound standards beyond the cinema?
Recording distributing and listening to music in surround sound?
Virtual space, how can we create it, why is it useful?
Can space be performed?

Electroacoustic music concert

Following the symposium, Robert Dow and Pete Stollery (University of Aberdeen) will present a concert of electroacoustic music, diffusing music on CD across an array of 20 loudspeakers as part of the Soundings Festival starting at 8pm.  In between pieces, they’ll describe their approaches to spatialisation in relation to composition and performance.
